Winooski

County: Chittenden
Best Creemee Stand: Little City Creemee

Contained to just over 1 square mile with a bustling nightlife scene and some of the most outstanding restaurants, Winooski is considered “urban” as far as Vermont standards go. But for all of its urban-ness, it actually has quite a lot of parks and open spaces for recreation.

Pedestrian-friendly, almost everything is conveniently accessible including Burlington!

Winooski is an involved community where people participate and communicate, celebrate, and activate together through the food shelf, meals on wheels, senior center, and other community programs that help those in need and keep people engaged. The city has an active city council with robust participation and elections that keep people civically engaged. The municipal plan moves the city forward yet recognizes the city’s historic nature

Winooski is one of the most diverse towns in Vermont and they celebrate that diversity in every direction. From the restaurant scene and small businesses to the school district and community organizations, Winooski welcomes people from all walks of life.

A former mill town, Winooski lies across the Winooski River from Burlington. While there is easy access to Burlington, Winooski has plenty to offer with its own character and rich diversity. Restaurants and nightlife center around the Winooski Circle (we love Monkey House, owned by our very own agent, Ryan!), with a seasonal Farmers Market along the banks of the river.

Waking Windows is a multi-day music festival in downtown Winooski. Featuring multiple venues, over thirty bands, art performances, and special events, Waking Windows is the highlight of every summer. Organizers are excited to bring the event back in 2022 when it’s safe to congregate.

The dining scene is as diverse as the community it serves. Misery Loves Company, Tiny Thai, Sneakers Bistro, and El Cortijo are just a few of the options available around the Winooski Circle.

Housing is a mix of apartments and single family homes, with repurposed mill buildings converting to condo units all over town.

Education

The Winooski School District is the smallest geographic district in Vermont. The District serves about 800 students in a single complex. The school is known for its diverse student body and proficiency based learning system.
